Stacey Campfield
by Martha Rose Woodward

stacey campfieldForty-two year old Stacey Campfield first ran for office seeking the position as Tennessee State Representative in the 18th District in 2002 and was defeated. He ran again in 2004 and was elected to the Tennessee General Assembly—a position for which he was reelected and served until 2010.

In the current election cycle, Campfield decided to seek the office of State Senator vacated by Senator Tim Burchett who sought the office of Knox County Mayor. The Campfield vs. Walker election could determine who will control the Tennessee State Senate.

Campfield consistently receives high ratings from the Tennessee Conservative Union, Tennessee Right to Life, the National Rifle Association and the National Federation of Independent Businesses. He was appointed as Chairman of the State and Local Subcommittee of the Government Operations Committee as well as a member of Consumer and Employee Affairs and the Children and Family Affairs Committee in the House of Representatives. He proudly states he has never voted for a tax increase.

Campfield is a Real Estate Re-developer who understands the challenges of the small business owners. He earned his AA in Marketing from Excelsior College. He went on to receive his BS in Management from Regents College.

According to Tom Humphrey in a newspaper article: The state Senate Democratic Caucus attacked Stacey Campfield as "out of step" with both the Knoxville community and current East Tennessee Republican state senators in opposing the state's pre-kindergarten program. However, Campfield pointed to the Governor's own data which indicated there were few, if any, gains shown by students who had attended the pre-k program.

Campfield, a sometimes controversial state representative who won the Republican nomination to succeed Sen. Tim Burchett as State Senator in the 7th District in the Aug. 5 primary, against stiff competition, said he was not surprised by the Democratic criticism.

"They (Democrats) only target the ones they fear," Campfield said in a telephone interview. "If I was some go-along, get-along guy, they'd be happy to have me."

Since he became active in politics, Campfield has been involved with the following organizations: American Red Cross, Children's Advocacy Council, Citizens Police Academy, College Republicans, Concord Farragut Republican Club, Knox Heritage, Knoxville Education Summit, Knoxville Traffic Calming Committee, Norwood Homeowners Association, OMNI, Read With Me Program, United Way, Wesley Neighbors, West Knox Republican Club, West Hills Homeowners' Association, and Young Republicans

Campfield is a Real Estate Re-developer.

His Legislative Committee assignments include: Children and Youth Committee, Tennessee General Assembly; Subcommittee on Domestic Relations; Consumer & Employee Affairs Committee, Tennessee House; Subcommittee on Employee Affairs, Vice-Chair; Government Operations Committee, Tennessee House.
